The problem isn’t the amount of parking lots, it’s that we do not *see* them

“Cities are limiting the density of people to limit the density of cars. Free parking has become the arbiter of urban form, and cars have replaced humans as zoning’s real density concern.”

  • There are somewhere between 800 million and 2 billion parking stalls in the United States.
  • There are between 3 and 8 stalls for every registered vehicle.
  • Surface parking lots alone cover more than 5% of all urban land in the United States. That represents an area greater than the states of Rhode Island and Delaware combined.
  • In Los Angeles, parking occupies more land than housing.
